All the World's a Classrooms
The World ORT Union rang in the new year with the premiere of the Global Campus, a new magazine-style Web site that showcases ORT's online educational programs and projects around the world. It also serves as a central point of access for all of ORT's Internet-based resource tools, including SORT, a Web directory of educational resources for teachers; English Space, which provides English language learning materials; and DO I.T., an introductory course in Information Technology. The Global Campus will also give ORT members the opportunity to chat on-line and do video conferencing.

New ORT School in Bombay
ORT India is expanding with a new school in Bombayon the site of the Sassoon School, an older ORT school. Courses will include both high-tech and academic subjects as well as new fields such as media studies, a growing economic sector in India.

ORT Student Makes TV Debut
For one day in December, ORT student Ben Mayost had the audience of a lifetime. Mayost, a high school senior and chairman of the Israel National Student and Youth Council, stood before President Clinton, Prime Minister Netanyahu and 700 Israeli students at the Jerusalem Congress Hall to express hope for peace in the Middle East. What's more, his short speech, in honor of the PresidentÕs December visit to Israel and Gaza, was broadcast live on CNN. Mayost, 17, studies at ORT Darsky Comprehensive High School in Akko.

World ORT Welcomes Singer
The Executive Committee of the World ORT Union has appointed Robert "Ron" Singer as its new Director General. Singer brings with him a deep knowledge of the Jewish communities in Israel, the United States, Eastern Europe and the FSU. Currently Deputy Head of the Liaison Bureau, Office of the Prime Minister in Israel, Singer was born in Ukraine and moved to Israel as a teenager. After 11 years in the army as an education officer, he worked with the Consul in New York as liaison to the U.S. government on issues concerning Jews in the FSU, and as an intermediary between American Jewish organizations and the Israeli government. Dr. Gideon Meyer, former Director of Education and Acting Director General, has been appointed Deputy Director General and Director of Operations.

Art Imitates ORT
Seizing technology for art, the ORT Resource Center is accepting multimedia works on CD-ROM as entries in this year's "Let My People Go" art contest. Students may also submit paintings, drawings and collages. A virtual exhibition on the ORT Resource Center Web site will display the winning works in May.

ORT Braude Grads Certified
The Israel's Engineers Union now considers Braude graduates with a B. Tech degree as certified engineers and will include them in their Engineer's Registrar.

ORT Resource Center Teaches
Training teachers in technology topped the agenda at a course sponsored by the ORT Resource Center in New York, the New York Board of Jewish Education and JESNA. During the six-session course, local Hebrew and Judaic studies teachers learned ways to use Web pages for homework postings and discussed the prospect of virtual libraries. Teachers also learned how to initiate multimedia projects for students and use Internet resources for distance learning.

On Location With Women's American ORT
The Evanston, Ill., ORT Resale Shop used to be so overloaded with merchandise that you couldn't walk through the aisles. Today, after a year of remodeling, the shop resembles a department store, with dining room tables set for mealtime, couches and chairs arranged living room-style, and a fresh, bright look that has already translated into dollar signs for Women's American ORT. The Evanston store also sells housewares, jewelry and clothing for adults and children. It is one of two ORT resale shops in the state and 15 across the country.
