Science Centers Project

Since its founding, ORT Megadim Comprehensive High School in Karmiel, Israel has prepared thousands of students for careers in communications and the sciences, offering programs of study in biotechnology, astrophysics, environmental sciences and television and cinema. Of particular note, Karmiel was founded as one of Israel's "Development Towns" and continues to serve as a point of absorption for immigrants from all over the Diaspora.

Despite the school's reputation for innovative and exceptional courses of study, their 5 science laboratories constructed and equipped in 1985, before the widespread use of computer technology, are particularly outdated. Furthermore, the demand for enrollment in science programs at ORT Megadim has significantly increased in recent years. Unfortunately, the lack of adequate and up-to-date science facilities has meant that only a limited number of the school's 1,300 students have the opportunity of pursuing science studies and matriculation options in this field.

This project is designed to equip the school with a cutting-edge science-teaching infrastructure that will allow greater numbers of students to study the full range of curricular science subjects, utilizing up-to-date methods and facilities. Additionally, this project will further prepare these students through the establishment of a formal research program at ORT Megadim.

Contributions to this project will enable ORT to:

• Upgrade electrical wiring systems and install computer network cabling;

• Replace out-of-date laboratory furniture;

• Purchase a range of modern scientific equipment, including five computers for each laboratory; and

• Acquire new laboratory equipment for teaching biotechnology and astrophysics courses.
