Empowering People Through Education

Who We Are/What We Advocate

Women's American ORT is a national Jewish fund raising organization that strengthens the worldwide Jewish community by empowering people to achieve economic self-sufficiency through technological and vocational education. This is accomplished through:

  • Providing financial support and leadership within the global ORT network of schools and programs.
  • In the United States, ensuring the continued growth of our post-secondary technical schools and developing technical resource centers for Jewish students, teachers and community groups nationwide.

Information regarding ORT schools and projects in Israel, France, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova that urgently need your financial support can be found in Current Projects.

Public Policy Resolutions

Women's American ORT welcomes the opportunities that come with change. We are developing the next generation of women leaders, working as advocates on a spectrum of issues and, above all, supporting the global network of ORT schools providing technological education in a Jewish environment.

We take great pride in the fact that Women's American ORT has been consistent in its commitment to supporting public policies and initiatives fostering a democratic society. Our resolutions were updated and adopted by our membership at the Second Triennial National Convention held in New York City, in July 2001. They reflect our concerns and authorize action for voluntary participation in local, state, national and international issues.

Women's American ORT is the largest affiliate and one of the largest contributors to the global network of ORT schools in the US, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, India and more than 50 other countries. With 300,000 students enrolled in 800 ORT schools and programs, ORT is the largest non-governmental network of vocational education and technical training centers in the world.

In the United States, Women's American ORT is a major supporter of ORT Operations USA, a national model for teaching job skills in technology. We spearheaded the establishment of three ORT technical institutes in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, where training and job placement services are offered to 5,500 students each year, most of whom are immigrants. ORT Operations USA has also initiated the ORT Resource Center and Computer Technology Centers in Atlanta, Cleveland and Miami, with additional locations under consideration.

Motivated by humanitarian principles, ORT also shares its expertise on a non-sectarian basis through a widespread program of international cooperation. Our unique international perspective enriches the organization as an arena for advocacy and action.

Our work begins with a renewed commitment to aggressive advocacy. Our traditions and our concerns demand no less.
