The Reporter - Writers' Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in The Reporter, a national semi-annual magazine for the contemporary American Jewish woman. Our readers are active, informed, and involved. The Reporter focuses on issues of education, Jewish life and culture worldwide, women, Israel, travel, technology, education, public policy, literature and the arts, and strives to employ objective reporting, crisp writing and trenchant analysis.

The Reporter is a publication of Women's American ORT, a nonprofit organization committed to improving the quality of Jewish life worldwide through technological and vocational education since 1927. The magazine is sent to the 55,000 members and supporters of Women's American ORT. Sections also appear on this very web site.

Articles are accepted both on speculation and assignment for the following sections:

Tachlis

  • 50-200 words $25-$50 each: Short, lively, newsy items from around the Jewish world: places to go, things to see and buy (especially women-created), web sites, publications and legislation, overheard, etc., particularly of interest to Jewish women. Also, ORT graduates, and "where they are now."

    • Departments

  • 800-1,000 words $150-$300: Includes Q&A, a one-page interview with a personality of interest; "Education Update," on trends in teaching, results of studies, news on technology education, school vouchers, and religion in public schools; and "Lasting Impression," a short story, essay, or excerpt or artwork that touches the mind or heart with a unique message.

    • Features

  • 1,800-2,000 words $300 and up: Issues of interest according to the focus of the magazine. Profiles of dynamic Jewish women making a difference in Judaism, women's issues, education, politics, business, journalism, sports, or the arts. Features relating to our public policy issues are especially appreciated.

    • ORT Matters

  • length and prices range: On worldwide ORT and Women's American ORT: news of major developments, special campaigns and community projects, glimpses of individual students and teachers in ORT schools.


    • Art/Illustrations/Photos are accepted with MS. Payment varies. Must include complete photo I.D.

    Payment is made within 60 days of publication. The Reporter is not responsible for the return of unsolicited materials.
